What is Kindermusik?
Potomac Music is an award winning, accredited Kindermusik studio. We were named a 2024 Kindermusik Top Program by Kindermusik International. Kindermusik is an award-winning, internationally accredited multi-sensory learning program for children ages birth - 7 years. Kindermusik boosts school readiness and development across all learning areas. Our classes include music & movement activity sequences that are engaging, research-based child-centered, developmentally appropriate, and creatively designed to set the stage for optimal multi-sensory learning. This fosters a lifelong love of music in children.
What happens in Kindermusik classes?
Multi-sensory music and movement activities in each class vary by age group and use age-appropriate instruments and movement props such as shakers, bells, hand drums, scarves, and a large parachute. Kindermusik for the Young Child explores the glockenspiel, recorder, and dulcimer. All classes allow for movement and multi-sensory music learning.

Foundations
Our Foundations classes offer a sensory-rich yet caring and gentle environment where babies can explore and react to new sounds, sensations, and objects. Shared activities for babies and their caregivers provide the opportunity to strengthen your connection with your child through joyful music-making experiences. Educators also teach families how sound exploration, listening activities, and dances help babies communicate, stimulate eye-tracking skills, and learn to move and coordinate new muscles.

Level One
More than just singing and playing instruments, this class provides opportunities for toddlers to explore new movement and language skills through dance, creative movement, echo songs, and more. Here, babies and toddlers explore new objects, movement, basic music concepts such as a steady beat, more complex songs, fine and gross motor skills, and body awareness.

Level Two
This class provides opportunities for older toddlers to express their own ideas and explore their creativity. Children and their parents or caregivers sing, dance, learn new vocabulary, and play instruments, all while problem-solving to the beat. Here, they explore sound identification, musical concepts, instruments such as rhythm sticks and sand blocks, language skills, and cognitive development.

Level Three
This class focuses on playing instruments, as well as sound exploration, ensemble development, creative play, and more. Preschoolers will enjoy the fun of music-making while boosting all areas of learning. This is a drop off class where parents/caregivers may participate in the last 15 minutes. Here, we learn pre-reading music, creative expression, language understanding, cognitive development, and listening/sound recognition.

Level Four
This class focuses on basic musical symbols, complex instruments, and more in-depth movement games. Children begin to master new music terms and concepts, and ready themselves for elementary math, reading, and writing. Here, we learn complex instrument play, movement variety, pretend play, language and literacy, and musical skills.

Kindermusik Musicians
Kindermusik Musicians classes teach children how to read musical notation, play instruments such as the recorder and glockenspiel, provide an outlet to explore new genres, and give children what they need to succeed in future instrument-specific music lessons.

Featured Success Story
Our daughter Lily has been attending “Music for the Young Child” Kindermusik classes since August 2022. She’s been thriving in the class and she really enjoys expressing herself through music so we were excited to enroll her again. The program is a perfect, gentle introduction to pitch and rhythm to a young ear. Lily’s teacher, Annie, does a great job guiding them through the gentle progression of the curriculum, and Lily is picking up the concepts really well. “We do a lot of fun stuff in music class! I like that you get to pick your own motion for the first hello song. We also do a lot of energetic things like singing with movement and we even have a parachute with handles that you hold and wave it up and down. I like that we can take the stuff at home and kids can work on their own music lessons at home too.”

How much do Kindermusik classes cost?
You may try a single demo class for just $20! Tuition thereafter is payable monthly at $99. Sibling discounts are available. Rates vary for our Kindermusik Musicians class series, summer camps, playdates, and Musical Storytime.
How often do classes occur?
Our classes meet each week at the same/day and time.
How many children are in each group class?
Group class size varies based on class type. Kindermusik typically ranges from 4 - 8 children. Piano Express classes have a capacity of 6 students (with 2 available slots for make up lessons). Other group class have availability up to 8 students.
Do I have to stay with my child throughout Kindermusik classes?
For Levels 1, 2, and our Saturday Mixed Ages classes, YES! A caregiver must be with their child throughout class. Caregivers also must attend playdates and Musical Storytime. Levels 3, 4, and Kindermusik Musicians are DROP OFF classes.
What if I am not musical? Do I have to sing during Kindermusik classes?
Singing is optional and not required for caregivers or your child. No musical skills are required. Kindermusik is a "come as you are" learning environment that encourages PROCESS over performance.
What if we need to miss our Kindermusik or Piano Express class?
We offer unlimited make-up classes while you have an active enrollment.
